Our school council is made up of one boy and one girl from each Year group from Year 1 to Year 6. We meet every Friday lunchtime with Mrs Calvert, the St Benet’s school council teacher representative and we are responsible for collecting the House points from each class. We organise the rewards for the termly and annual winners of the House Point competition. We discuss ideas to help improve our school and fundraise for those less fortunate than ourselves.
We are currently planning and designing ideas for a prayer garden in school, which we are aiming to be developed in our school grounds by the Summer Term 2018.
Some previous projects that we have organised include having a ‘Bring a Teddy Bear to School’ day for a small donation. All funds raised helped us to buy a Buddy Bench which is outside in the playground for children to sit on at playtimes if they want some ‘time out’ or are looking for someone to play with. During Advent 2015 and 2016, we helped to choose some of the Cafod World Gifts, thinking about what we believe children in poorer countries would like to receive as a gift at Christmas time. We have also designed posters to raise awareness of Autism in school so everyone feels equal and valued in our community.
We also act as a voice for the pupils in the school and address issues that are important to the children, bringing them to the attention of staff as well as suggesting their own solutions. For any pupils reading this, if you have anything that you would like us to discuss at a meeting, please get in touch with us.
