Who are the Mini Police?
The Mini Police project within Durham Constabulary is a fun and interactive volunteering opportunity for 9 to 11-year-old children. The Mini Police support the force priorities, through participation in community engagement events. Those involved can look forward to developing a confident voice through enjoyable experiences. Children who become part of the programme help to tackle local issues, as highlighted by their own communities. By assisting the police service, they also carry that ownership and pride back into the community they live in.
Mini Police at St. Benet’s…
Our Mini Police project began in our school in September 2016. Miss Loughlin leads the group however, the children take part in every meeting as we discuss Mini Police activities and any future events that require planning. We work closely with our local area’s PCSO, James Robson. We are also very lucky to have our own Mini Police uniform that we wear when we are presenting to the whole school or when we are participating in community events.
What have the Mini Police done?
Since beginning our successful project, we have participated in various community events;
We have visited the opening of the new Police Headquarters to assist in providing a ‘guard of honour’ for Princess Anne.
We took part in assisting the policing team and stewards at the Durham Dash events by marshalling the crossing points, ensuring safety.
Our female Mini Police members visited the Riverside Cricket Club to experience the Star Women in Policing event where they met inspirational women in the police force.
We were also given the treat to explore life in the police force. We met Jet and Ben, went in a riot van, experienced what it is like in a police car and saw a police helicopter.
We hope to continue the success of our Mini Police project by developing our community and attending events!
